Civil engineers have the broad task of creating, improving and protecting our environment and providing facilities to live (i.e., roads, water supply, sewage, waste management, irrigation, etc.). They must plan, design, construct and operate water and wastewater treatment plants, analyze water quality and find ways of reusing water.

With the increasing amount of plastic waste, civil engineers are finding ways of using this waste. They are constructing “plastic roads” which are mainly made up of plastic carry bags, disposable cups and bottles that were put in garbage dumps. By including plastic, there is less cement and sand needed (which is also more cost effective). Also, the addition of plastic will increase the melting point and make it so that rainwater doesn’t seep its way into the roads, thus resulting in a need to have fewer road repairs.
